SCREEN SELECTION

The Two Key Factors

To choose the screen that will yield optimum image quality and result in the best possible presentation, consider two factors.

  • The size and available space of the venue
  • The right aspect ratio and materials for the space

Available Space

When you are selecting screens, one of your first questions should be: What size of a space are you fitting the screen to? Choose a screen large enough to enable those in the farthest edges of the space to clearly read text and view images and other graphics. Also make sure those close to the screen don’t find the image size overwhelming.

To achieve this balance, it’s helpful to arrange seats to those in the first row are two screen heights from the projection screen. In most cases, the screen should be a standard viewing height of 48” off the floor–a distance called the Sill Height. The 48″ guideline applies when the audience and projection screen are on the same level and the seating area is limited to several rows.

Be sure to measure room dimensions before choosing a screen in order to prevent low screen height and limited visibility.

Screen Size / Aspect Ratio

For many customers, it’s helpful to determine the desired aspect ratio next: 16:9 widescreen or 4:3 video format. First, calculate the height:

If you plan to use a Video Format screen (4:3 ratio), the screen height should be 1/6 distance from the screen to the furthest seats for most large venue presentations. For smaller venues such as conference rooms or classrooms, apply a formula of 1/4 (one quarter) the distance from the projection screen to the furthest seat away. For widescreen (16:9) format projection screens, we recommend using the formula of 1/3 (one third) the distance from projection screen to the furthest seat in the venue.

Once you know the height of your screen, calculate the width you need as follows: For Video Format (4:3) sizes multiply the height by 1.33. For widescreen format (16:9) sizes, multiply the height by 1.78.

Portable or Installation?

Some final questions will help round out your screen selection with the accessories or add-ons

you need:

  • Do you need ground support or will you make a permanent installation? See the Accessories page for available options.
  • Do you need a carrying case for your portable application? Refer to the Accessories page.
